Hedgehog Class 🦔 This week in Hedgehog Class, we delved into the concept of equivalent fractions. Our exploration included finding a third of various numbers and shapes, and using this knowledge to determine 3/4. We then applied our understanding to solve reasoning questions. In Design and Technology, we tested our teamwork and resilience through a paper tower challenge. Given just 10 minutes, scrap paper, and tape, the task was to build the tallest freestanding tower. It was fantastic to see the children collaborating effectively in groups and employing creative techniques to stabilise their towers. On Wednesday's open day, the Hedgehog Class showcased their impressive learning by presenting their Traction Man story map on stage. I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them!

Woodpecker Class

Image
In the Woodpecker Class this week, the children have blown me away with their incredible writing! The children innovated our story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and made it their own by changing the setting and character. They all worked extremely hard to write the beginning, middle and end independently. In Science this week, we recorded our findings of our plant experiment and wrote explanations as to why we think one plant grew very well and the other did not. In out Jigsaw lesson, the children discussed the people who help them and sorted pictures of who helps them at school vs who helps them out of school. Well done Woodpeckers on another great week!

Mini Dragons Daisy Class

Image
It's been such a great week of adventure and exploration in the Daisy Class.  We have been having so much fun in the Mini Dragons garden, the Early Years playground, and the Soft Play Room. We have been showing off our physical development by running, jumping, climbing, crawling and sliding!  We love to dance and sing, dig and paint, explore nature and play games together. Our topic this week is 'Fruits' and we have been using good communication skills to talk about fruits we like and fruits we don't like! We learnt a new song called 'The Fruit Song' by Singing Walrus. Listen to it at home and sing along!

Year 1 Robins

We have had some very creative stories which have been lovely to read. In Maths we completed our unit on fractions, and this week we learned about equivalent fractions and counting up in fractions. In Science we learned the components of an electrical circuit and then had a go at making our own ones! We really enjoyed the buzzers and switching them on and off!

Dragonfly Class

Image
This week the Dragonfly class was filled with exciting activities and memorable experiences. We kicked off the week with a visit from a dentist who taught us about healthy dental habits, which the children found both informative and fun. In our math lessons, we continued to practice addition and subtraction while also reviewing our knowledge about shapes, reinforcing our understanding through engaging activities. We also began innovating our Talk4Write story, crafting our own unique storylines based on 'Giraffes Can't Dance.' The children were eager to share their imaginative twists and turns, showcasing their storytelling skills and creativity. To end the week, we welcomed our families to watch us perform on stage in the Araya Hall for our class assembly, a moment of pride and joy for everyone involved. Overall, it was a dynamic and enriching week in the Dragonfly class.

Caterpillar Class - 17th May

Image
This week we have looked at how we can manipulate shapes and use them to make other shapes and pictures. We learnt the word ‘rotate’ and used positional language to describe where shapes were on our pictures. We have enjoyed using our story map to create our own parts of the story replacing characters and actions to show our understanding of how our story sentences are structures. We have used the word ‘then’ to join our actions together.   As part of our learning about the world we have explored what a habitat is and talked about different habitats that are familiar to us. We enjoyed matching animals to different habitats and drawing a habitat for our favorite animals. In Jigsaw we talked about unkind words and how they make us feel. This week we were very happy to meet some real dentists who helped us understand why it is important to look after our teeth. We practiced brushing our teeth and then talked about how food is also important to help keep our teeth and bodies hea...

Ladybird Class - 17th May

Image
In Knowledge and Understanding of the World , we have been exploring animals and their habitats around the world, learning why animals live in specific places. Using this knowledge, the children innovated our story map of "Giraffes Can't Dance." They changed the main character from a giraffe to an animal of their choice and updated the setting from Africa to a habitat that matches their chosen animal. The children illustrated their changes on the story map and wrote sentences to describe them. In Maths , we have been revisiting shapes. The children have been manipulating, composing, and decomposing shapes to create new shapes and pictures. This hands-on learning has been both educational and fun, helping the children develop their spatial awareness and creativity. We've also had an exciting time in the woodwork zone . The plans that the children drew last week have come to life as they sawed, hammered, glued, and drew to create their projects. This practical experienc...

Tulip Class: Vegetables Week

Image
The Tulips learned all about vegetables this week! We had some fun activities exploring the smells, textures, and shapes of different vegetables. We read the story, "Oliver's Vegetables", about a boy who does not like vegetables but loves french fries. Oliver helps his grandfather in the garden and learns that french fries come from potatoes. The Tulips planted their very own seeds this week, helping us grow some vegetables in the classroom. The Tulip friendships are growing and it has been lovely to see their creative play together. We look forward to next week! - Miss Taryna, Miss Angel, Mr Gino, and Miss Sai

Well done to all the children in Pufferfish class on another fantastic week. We have completed lots of art work, read lots of stories and learnt some new sounds in Phonics. We have continued to be excellent friends to others, following our class and school values and have talked about the importance of our relationships and friendships during our Jigsaw lessons. Well done Pufferfish!

Seahorse Class

Image
It’s been another busy week in Seahorse Class. On Tuesday we had a very educational visit from the dentist. We learnt all about when to brush our teeth and for how long. In Talk for Write we have finished learning The Little Red Hen and know the whole story very well. Next week we will adapt the story with our own ideas. In phonics we have learnt our first special friends sound “sh” and are playing fun phonics games to help us remember all the sounds. We can’t wait for another exciting week next week!

Magpie Class

Image
Another magnificent week in Magpie class! We have continued to look at place value to 100 in maths and the children are now brilliant when it comes to comparing numbers. In Art, we drew our own landscapes using realistic colours for the background. In science, we checked our results from our plant experiment. The children were shocked when they discovered that the plant in the dark had grown taller than the plant in the sunlight! Well done for a great week Magpies!

Bumblebee Class

Image
Another learning-packed week in Bumblebee class! This week we have innovated the story of Giraffes Can't Dance. The bumblebees used their knowledge of the story to create a new story showing lots of creativity and imagination. In maths, we have been manipulating, composing and decomposing shapes. We moved, turned, rotated and flipped shapes to create new scenes and pictures. For knowledge and understanding of the world, we have been learning about and making animal habitats.  A highlight of our week was being invited to the pre-prep open day to perform our talk for writing story, ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’. The bumblebees stole the show yet again with their confidence and joy!

Jellyfish Class

Image
The children have been so happy to be able to spend so much time outside this week. We have managed to get to the Early Years Garden at least once a day and the Mini Dragon's Garden twice. I have also wiggled around our daily timetables to allow us to have some lovely big chunks of time to get creative in the classroom. The Jellyfish have been doing lots of junk modeling this week and we have talking about and planning all of their projects. I have asked them to gather the materials they will need, pour their paints, and think of the best ways to join pieces together. this has helped their independence and problem-solving. We are working towards the children going to Reception so and providing lots of opportunities for them to take responsibility for and look after themselves. They are growing up fast!

Otter Class - HT5 W4

Image
This week in Otter Class, in English we have planned and created our own versions of the a story from Traction Man. We planned our own setting, main character and side kick. Then we used our new story maps or box plans to create our stories. We are extremely proud of our writing accomplishments and have focused well on our targets. In Maths this week, we have really enjoyed the ending of our topic of Fractions. We learnt have to make fractions of amounts, find fractions of shape as well as identifying 1 half and 2 quarters as the same fraction.

Sunflower Class

Image
We have had another wonderful week in the Sunflower Class. This week in the Sunflower Class we have been exploring a range of vegetables.  This focus has provided lots of different sensory learning opportunities and allowed us to revisit the descriptive words we were using during book week, as we talked about how the vegetables felt, using words such as bumpy, smooth, soft and hard.   The children are showing a growing interest in mark making and many of them had a go a drawing different vegetables, carefully looking at shape and size, and representing this in their drawings.   Next week we will move on to exploring fruit and we are looking forward to welcoming our Sunflower Families into class on Wednesday for Family Time, where you will get the opportunity to engage in sensory learning with your child.

Butterfly Class

Image
Well done to the Butterfly class for yet another wonderful week of learning. This week the children had lots of fun as they were visited by Dr Yui and the team of dentists from Thonglor Medical Hospital. They dressed up as dentists as they practised brushing teeth for 2 minutes! The doctor's theme has continued in our class as the children have been racing for the dressing up box and have made their own doctor's surgery. In maths we have explored shapes and the children have been intrigued to manipulate shapes in different directions and were fascinated to fully understand that they can make new shapes by joining shapes together! We have continued our work based on our Talk for Write text ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’. This time, the children had fun learning about different animal habitats and making up their own stories based upon different habitats and occurrences there. We look forward to a trip to Kiztopia next week and also to welcoming our families into the classroom to share o...

Sea Turtle Class

Image
This week we had some very special dentist visitors that taught us all about how to keep our teeth healthy and clean! We learnt about how we need to brush our teeth twice a day for 2 minutes and how important it is to use toothpaste. The children then enjoyed being dentists themselves, and cleaning their patients teeth! During our play based learning, we enjoyed doing tooth-related activities such as brushing and counting teeth. In Talk 4 Write, we have been recalling the story of 'The Little Red Hen' very well and are beginning to think about the changes that we can innovate our story with. We have been outside lots more this week and enjoyed the outdoor areas - especially the sand pit and water areas! Another great week in Sea Turtle class.

Headmaster's message Friday 10th May 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians, It has been nice to see our students enjoying some slightly cooler temperatures this week which has had a very positive impact on play times as well as PE and Games lessons. We hope the weather will remain like this for some time. Our current Sixth Form students have enjoyed their first few days in our new Sixth Form centre this week. It is great to see how they are utilising this space to prepare for their external examinations. The formal launch of this facility will be in August but we really didn't want to miss out on our pioneer Year 13 group to miss out on utilising this wonderful new space. This week in Pre-Prep we were visited by colleagues from DLTS who came to observe our teaching of phonics. They were very impressed with the structure of what they saw and the progress that our students are making. Also in Pre-Prep excitement is building in Year 2 about out first ever Y2 residential which is happening on 7th June. I believe residentials are o...

Head of Senior Message

Image
Next week we focus on our Mental Health.  In a world that constantly demands more from us, where stressors seem to multiply by the day, the significance of mental health cannot be overstated. As educators, we must equip our young people with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of their mental well-being. The earlier they understand and prioritise their mental health, the better equipped they will be to lead fulfilling and balanced lives; it's a big part of nurturing great global leaders. First and foremost, it's crucial to demystify mental health. Mental health is not just about mental illness. It encompasses a spectrum of emotions, thoughts, and behaviours that influence how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. By educating young minds about this spectrum, we empower them to recognise and address their emotional needs. Moreover, fostering an open dialogue about mental health helps break down barriers of shame and isolation. Y...

Dear DBS Prep Parents, As we navigate through another vibrant week here at DBS, I am pleased to share some highlights and updates from our school community. On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming back our Year 7 students, who returned from the highly prestigious VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas, Texas. This was not just a competition, but a platform where our students' hard work and dedication were put to the test on a global scale. Their exemplary teamwork and innovative thinking were evident throughout the competition, and we hope they are rightly proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations to 'Blockade Brigade' for representing DBS with such distinction. Thanks to Mrs. Hall and Mr. Dunphy for their dedication in organising this unforgettable experience. On Wednesday, we hosted prospective students and families for our Prep and Senior Open Day. This event was particularly special as it coincided with the opening week of our new Sixth Form Centre. The...

Head of Pre-Prep's Message

We've had an exciting week here at DBS, with a special visit from teachers of the Denla DLTS program. The focus of their visit was to observe and understand our approach to teaching English in the Pre-Prep department. We're thrilled to share that they were thoroughly impressed with our methods and that we received excellent feedback.  Our showcase included a glimpse into our phonics sessions, integral to laying a strong foundation for language development in our youngest learners. Following this, we seamlessly transitioned into our Talk for Writing lessons, showcasing how we nurture creativity and literacy skills in tandem. These carefully curated programs, RWInc  and Talk for Writing, were selected to provide the best possible education for our Pre-Prep children here at DBS. I am immensely proud of our Pre-Prep teachers and the dedication they demonstrate in delivering these lessons. Through continuous professional development, including teacher INSET days and addition...

U9 Touch mixed vs SHR

Image
The DBS Under 9s took to the field against Shrewsbury last Tuesday for their first 5-a-side, touch rugby match of the season.  They performed fantastically and showed great maturity in how they behaved. We played with 16 students, rolling on and off throughout the game, and all participants showed how well they'd been working in only 2 weeks of rugby training so far.  They scored numerous points and were very disciplined in defence, which hugely limited how many points the opposition managed to score.  Well done to all involved! DBS VEX Robotics Teams in the World Championships in Dallas, USA

Image
Last week 8 of our Prep and Senior Students travelled to Dallas, Texas USA with Mrs Hall and Mr Dunphy to compete in the VEX VIQRC Robotics World Championships.  August, Hug, Rafha and Ryuka, in team 55580B ‘Blockade Brigade’ competed in the Elementary School Competition and Ben, Freddie, Pat and Pump, team 55580C ‘The Final Dogbot’ competed in the Middle School Competition. VEX Robotics is a student-centred programme and the teams are expected to work very independently to design, build, code and drive a robot to complete a number of challenges in the competition.  As you might remember, these 2 teams became Champions of Thailand in February, winning the Excellence Award at the Thai National Championships and securing the only 2 guaranteed places for Thailand at the World Finals. Winning places at Worlds represented a huge success worldwide. There were over 16,900 teams from around the world participating in competitions this year but only 840 teams qualified for a place in t...
