Dear Parents and Guardians, Happy Chinese New Year! There was a fantastic festive spirit on the campus this morning for our celebrations with wonderful performances in assemblies throughout the day. A huge thank you to Mr Liu, the Mandarin Department and our events team for organising the event. We had another successful sporting weekend last weekend when we took our first ever squad to the FOBISIA swimming. Every student reached a personal best which is a truly remarkable achievement. Well done to  Ployya Y5,  Earney Y5,  Enfant Y5,  Peachy Y5,  Primmie Y6,  Prom Y6,  Put Y6,  Matoom Y8 and  Pepper Y8.  Pepper    qualified for  4 final events  and went on to finish  1st in both 50m and 100m breaststroke  against 107 other athletes. The time he got in his 50m breaststroke has now ranked him  9th in Thailand  for his age category, which I think we can agree is an outstanding achievement!  We have a busy weekend of sport ahead with U13 and U15 volleyball as well as U19 basketball. DBS triumph at VEX Robotics Thailand National Finals

Image
It's the time of year when our VIQRC Robotics Teams battle it our at St Andrew's School to see who will be the champions of Thailand. Our teams have entered for the last 5 years and have been victorious every year. We were under pressure to maintain our excellence as we competed last Saturday. This year was the biggest competition so far at the annual VIQRC Competition in Thailand, with 62 teams in total. The standard of the robots and game play was also the highest we have ever seen. There were only 2 chances to win the top prize of the Excellence Awards and I'm pleased to say that our DBS students won both of them! This means we are the Champions of Thailand and have qualified for the World Championships which will be held in Dallas, Texas in May. Congratulations to our students: Elementary School Excellence Award winners: August, Hug, Rafha and Ryuka Middle School Excellence Award winners: Ben, Freddie, Pat, Pump Special mention for our other 3 teams who all scored their

The Reception children enjoyed celebrating their learning about bridges of the world!

Image
The Reception children enjoyed celebrating their learning about bridges of the world! This term all the Reception children have been reading the Talk 4 Write story 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff' and have learnt what bridges are used for and how they are constructed.  The children were set a fun challenge to work together in pairs or groups of their choice to discuss and build their own bridges across the 'river'.  The children could choose materials of their choice and their finishes were spectacular! Some children even managed to programme the Beebot digital programmable toys to cross the bridges that were strong enough.  Well done all.  What fantastic engineers you are!

Celebrating Mathematical Brilliance at DBS!

Last week, a record 127 of our brilliant students, ranging from Year 8 to Year 11, took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge in our brand new examination centre. The UKMT challenges are globally recognised competitions held annually to promote a love and curiosity about the subject.  Mr. Woolaston, Head of Mathematics, emphasised the significance of Mathematics in the wider world and the opportunities offered at DBS.  He remarked, "We are incredibly proud of the opportunities we provide here at DBS. Promoting this competition to all students underscores our belief that Mathematics is a critical skill for everyone, not just a select few. For us, it's essential to recognise and celebrate our students' successes, whether it's an improved score compared to the previous year or the achievement of a coveted gold certificate.  At DBS, we are committed to making Mathematics accessible to every student, fostering a love for the subject and ensuring it becomes an inte

World Scholars Visit to DBS

Image
We were honoured to host a special presentation by Arsh, a distinguished alumnus of the World Scholar's Cup (WSC).  Arsh, who now travels to schools worldwide, shared his enriching experiences as a WSC participant with our young scholars. This year marks a significant milestone as DBS is the exclusive host of all three Bangkok WSC events: the Regional Round in March, the Skittles Round in May, and the Bangkok Global Round in August.  Building on the success of last year's Global Round, where we welcomed over 3500 scholars from 40 countries, Arsh's engaging presentation left our students enthused.  As a delightful surprise, a trademark Alpaca was gifted to one lucky scholar, adding to the excitement and camaraderie surrounding this exceptional partnership between DBS and WSC.

DBS Diversity and Inclusivity Pin Competition

Image
Based on the principle of universalism, DBS recognises the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their background, identity, or belief system.  Through this, DBS has decided to host a Diversity and Inclusion Week in March to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity in our community. Students have been invited to design as part of a competition a diversity pin for DBS that promotes diversity, equality, and inclusion.  The winning design will be made into an actual badge that can be worn by the DBS community. The deadline for the design is Thursday 15th February, with the winning design announcement being during International Day. We look forward to seeing the designs!

Butterfly Class

Image
Thank you to all of our wonderful parents for all coming to support your children during our Family Time session this week. The children were full of joy and were so happy to share their learning with you all. Thank you for your continued support as always. This week has been a hive of activity in the Butterfly classroom. We have visited the wood work zone again and spent time rehearsing for the amazing Chinese New Year celebrations tomorrow! The children have once again demonstrated their brilliance and confidence on the stage and I know you will be proud of them all. We held our end of loop celebration in the Reception corridors, where we turned the learning space into a huge river. The children worked in partners or groups to design bridges big and strong enough for an electrical programmable toy 'goat' to cross- what fun! In maths we continue to work on our number sense skills and are getting really good at using 10 frames to help us notice mathematical patterns. Amazing wo

Fox Class

This week we have been writing our leaflets about Thai festivals in English and we ended the week by beginning to publish them. In Maths we explored the connections between the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and started to spot patterns and ways to identify if a number is in all of them or a particular one. Finally in Art we made our wind chimes for the Selfish Giant. There was great co-operation and teamwork as everyone supported each other. We also spent some time learning and painting Azulejo tiles, as part of our display board for International Day.

Rhyme time and Chinese New Year - Sunflower Class 🌻

Image
This week it was lovely to welcome those families who were able to join us for Family Time.   This was a great opportunity for the children to share some of their favourite nursery rhymes with you and show how we have been learning these through our play.  It is wonderful to see how much the children have grown in confidence and how their understanding has developed since the start of Mini Dragons.   We also celebrated Chinese New Year this week.  The children loved learning about how families prepare for the celebration by decorating their homes.  Watching the Lion Dance on Friday morning was very exciting and the children then had the chance to continue exploring this celebration through their play.   We hope you all have a lovely weekend.  Next week we will be making preparations for our International Day celebrations on Friday 16th February and we are excited to share these with you all.   Miss Sarah, Miss O, Miss Ploy and Miss Angel

Caterpillar Class - 9th February

Image
The Caterpillar Class has had a wonderful week full of learning fun. One of the highlights was sharing our classroom with our families during Wednesday’s Family Time. It was lovely to see how enthusiastic the children were to show you everything and thank you once again for all your support. In a week packed with exciting events we enjoyed watching the lions dance and performing our songs to welcome the Chinese New Year. We also showed our STEAM skills though building amazing bridges for the bee-bots to cross as an end to our unit on the Three Billy Goats Gruff. In Maths we explored the concepts of one more and one less while consolidating our number knowledge to 10 and for our literacy work we began to use our story structure to invent our own tales. Our phonics knowledge is growing every week and we have also continued on this journey becoming more confident in blending our sounds as well as writing using words and sentences.

Mini Dragons Class

Image
This week the Mini Dragons have been happily learning about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac! We have been using puppets, toys, stories and songs to learn the names of all the animals from the Great Race. The children especially love the ferocious DRAGON!  We have made some fire-breathing dragon crafts and been exploring lots of stories with dragons in them. We have also been busy in the Chinese takeaway making dumplings to sell! The children love using the white playdough to make rice dumplings, which they then pack in containers and write down the order.  They even use the toy phone to make an order for delivery. This has been a wonderful week of learning, and we are excited for next week's International Day!

Otter Class

Image
This week in Otter class, started off a new writing genre. We have been learning about informational texts and the difference between fiction and non-fiction. We then used our knowledge, videos and pictures to help us create bullet points, moving onto turning our bullet points back into full sentences to make paragraphs. In Art, we finished off our topic of sound by creating our very own wind chimes. we used our creative minds, designs and recycling materials to create our very chimes, maing sure we had all the components listed included. In Maths, we have been finishing off our topic of multiplication and division, learning about the 2, 5 and 10 times table. We now know how to use jottings and arrays to successfully work out number sentences or worded problems. Finally, we have enjoyed preparing for our Chinese New Year assembly, during our Mandarin lessons and singing assemblies.

Woodpecker Class

Image
This week in the Woodpecker class the children have been working extremely hard in all lessons. In Maths, they have been using the scales to weigh different objects in the classroom and make comparisons, using vocabulary such as: heavier and lighter. In English, the children have been learning about instructions and the use of bossy verbs. The children thoroughly enjoyed performing on stage for Chinese New Year and did so with fantastic confidence. Another great week Woodpeckers - well done!
