Dear Parents and Guardians, This week has been a much quieter week than normal with a day off for Labour Day on Wednesday. Last weekend we had another set of sporting achievements with our Under 9s winning the BISA netball tournament and the U11s taking runner up in their division.  We will have much to celebrate in our sports awards evenings this term which will be advertised soon. We had a record number of students enter the UKMT Junior Maths challenge. 3 of our students have qualified for the Mathematics Olympiad. Well done to Poh, Wish and Luke. I am receiving daily feedback from our Vex team in Dallas who are thoroughly enjoying the competition and riding the rollercoaster of successes and challenges. regardless of the final achievements, we can be certain that they are having a fantastic experience competing globally at the highest level. External examinations are now in session with Art and DT exams this week. We wish all of our students success in their exams.  Have a nice week

Head of Senior Message - Should I get a tutor?

Image
This week I had the great pleasure of meeting and collaborating with a tutor service. I am often asked whether students need tutoring and I have often heard that students need good tutoring to achieve good grades. As a Western educated person, the use of a tutor is deeply alien. Many students excelled at my schools and they did so by themselves with their teachers' support. The instinct was to look to ourselves first, not to the outside for help. Moving away from this bias has been hard but I would like to take each of these statements in turn and suggest how very good tutors - like the ones I met - can lead to great outcomes. Do students need tutoring? In short, sometimes.  As educators, we are constantly striving to provide our students with the best possible opportunities for learning and growth. One popular method is tutoring. However, the effectiveness of tutoring hinges greatly on how it is implemented and the goals that are set in place. When utilised correctly, tutoring c

Dear DBS Prep Parents and Guardians, We have been celebrating some great success this week, with superb results coming in for students in Sport and Maths. Our Under 9 Netballers secured another BISA victory at last weekend's tournament, and the Under 11s were runners-up, also in Netball. For our first year competing in this sport, these results are superb and demonstrate the adaptable and transferable skills that our sports girls and boys are developing.  In Maths, we are thrilled to celebrate a record number of DBS entrants into the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, with 125 students participating. This challenging and competitive event is a true test of our students' mathematical abilities. We are delighted to announce that 3 students have qualified for the Junior Maths Olympiad, a prestigious achievement. Congratulations to Poh, Wish and Luke on this tremendous result. I would like to give a special mention to Poh who achieved full marks in the event, a truly remarkable performan

Another eventful week has passed here in the Pre-Prep, filled with learning and exploration. The creative endeavours of Book Week continued into this week with the delightful books, made by our Pre-Prep children now adorning the shelves in our Pre-Prep library. Witnessing the joy on their faces as they immerse themselves in these literary treasures during library sessions has been truly heartwarming. The children have felt very proud of their books and having the opportunity for their peers to read their work has been extremely rewarding. After a couple of weeks, we will replace the books back into the classrooms, where they can be enjoyed by families during Family Time. This week, alongside Miss Taylor and Miss Kennett, our Maths coordinator, we began our Maths Learning Walks throughout our Pre-Prep classrooms. Learning Walks are a vital opportunity for us to deeply understand the teaching of mathematics, explore the curriculum, and engage directly with our young learners. By conver

U9 & U11 Netball teams travelled to Shrewsbury to compete in the end of season BISA tournament.

Image
On Saturday 27th April, the DBS U9 & U11 Netball teams travelled to Shrewsbury to compete in the end of season BISA tournament.  The U9 DBS Dragons won all four of their matches, demonstrating excellent teamwork and understanding in a game that many students had only been playing for a matter of weeks.  All students rotated through a number of positions on the court, using a range of attacking and defending skills to emerge victorious, and bring home the first place trophy.  Well done to all students involved and thank you to parents for their wonderful support from the sidelines. The U11 Dragons were equally as impressive winning almost all of their games and narrowly losing to a very good Shrewsbury Team in the final match and finishing as Runners Up.  They scored 46 in 6 games. So that's a fantastic start to the term in our first BISA tournament. Winners and Runners Up.  Superb work to all involved.

A delightful occasion by inviting the children to come to school dressed in their cosiest pajamas.

DBS transformed bedtime storytelling into a delightful occasion by inviting the children to come to school dressed in their cosiest pajamas.  This playful twist aimed to emphasise the importance of reading before bed. Research demonstrates that a nightly story session not only cultivates a love for reading but also enhances vocabulary and cognitive skills.  Just imagine, by the time a child graduates from Pre-Prep, they'll have enjoyed over a thousand stories if they have one each night with a family member! DBS experienced an exciting morning during the annual DBS "The Voice" House competition.

Image
Adding a fresh twist to the event this year was the introduction of the House Shout segment, where senior students graced the stage as a collective house to showcase their vocal prowess. With a thematic nod to Book Week, all performances were required to incorporate a literary theme into their songs.  Each house poured their heart and soul into their performances, but it was the dynamic rendition of "Be Our Guest" from Disney's Beauty and the Beast by Windsor House that secured the victory, with Sandringham House claiming a commendable runner-up position. Transitioning to the individual category of the competition, soloists representing each house battled it out for the coveted The Voice trophy. The exceptional talent showcased by DBS students made it a challenging decision for our esteemed panel of judges.  Ultimately, Matoom from Buckingham emerged triumphant, with Timmy from Sandringham clinching the runner-up title.   View Gallery

The U13 girls played a tough game under very hot conditions against King's College.

Image
As always, the team gave 100% and showed a fantastic attitude throughout the entire match and our defence was strong during the game.  The team kept pushing forward, demonstrating their determination. There are bits to work on, and I look forward to seeing these improvements during training and future matches.  Well done team! View Gallery

Woodpecker Class

This week in the Woodpeckers the children were excited to find some magic beans, a golden egg and a letter from a boy called Jack in our classroom - it was a fantastic introduction to our new Talk4Write story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children have discussed what it would be like to meet a giant and have drawn fantastic pictures and written detailed sentences on what it would look like. In Science this week, the children enjoyed planting seeds and discussed what plants need to grow. They have made predictions about what will happen to their seed over the next few weeks. Our Jigsaw lesson this week was all about friendship. The children discussed what it means to be a good friend and shared qualities about the children in the class that made them such good friends. In Maths this week, the children have been learning about the place value of numbers from 50-100. They have used concrete materials to build numbers and can identify how many tens and how many ones a number has. Well don

Mini Dragons Daisy Class

Image
This week the Daisies have been exploring all sorts of vegetables as part of our topic 'How Things Grow'. We have been peeling, scraping and chopping all sorts of herbs and vegetables and learning what is inside.  This is a great opportunity to learn about all the different sorts of foods that are healthy and help us grow. We now that it is important to eat the rainbow when we sit down to a meal, and now we can tell our teacher which vegetables we like, and which ones we don't!

Hedgehog Class

Image
Hedgehog Class  What a delightful start to our week and our writing adventure! This week, Hedgehogs brought in their favourite toy and created a four-part story! They captured each scene using freeze frames with iPads. They developed characters, settings, and dialogue. Everyone demonstrated fantastic imagination 💭 Great work! In maths we have been learning about fractions. We have practically shown we can halve and quarter an amount or shape. Outstanding origami creations were made by the Hedgehogs following instructions accurately! 🦔 In art we have been practicing our listening skills. We explored how it is important to follow instructions. I am super proud of Hedgehog’s teamwork and patience ⭐️ It was great to see the Hedgehogs helping each other when needed and showing  patience  throughout. Great week, Hedgehogs!

ฺีButterfly Class : 3rd May 2024

Image
The Butterfly class has been flying in so many ways this week! The children continue to be interested in aeroplanes and so we have really embraced their interests this week. They have been using their phonics skills to write air tickets for each other and they have used maps to locate where in the world they wish to fly. There has been a steady flow of chefs, making food for all of the people on board. The children have impressed us with their amazing English language skills and ever increasing vocabulary as they prepare and discuss what they need on board. They have looked at photos of the Earth from the sky and even made their own control station in the cockpit. Other Butterflies have been particularly interested in making paints and have been experimenting how to make new colours by mixing different chalk dust together. They have particularly enjoyed painting pictures of flowers and writing their names too. In Maths, the children are now really confident with the concept of addition

Fox Class

This week we have gotten straight into our new text for English - Traction Man! We had a lot of fun with our toys and in groups created a comic strip story which we then wrote for our cold task. In Maths we have continued learning about fractions and have focused on halves and quarters. In Jigsaw our unit is all about relationships. This week we discussed the difference between types of physical contact and which ones we like, such as hugs and hi-fives, and which we don't like such as kicking.

Bumblebee Class

Image
This week in Bumblebee Class we have continued to practice for our class assembly. I am so proud of how well the Bumblebees are rising to the challenge, showing confidence and resilience!   In math’s, we have been exploring number stories, using the vocabulary first, then, and now. We read the story Mouse Count’ by Ellen Stoll Walsh to support this concept. We have also been using the mathematical signs plus and equals in our number stories.   In Jigsaw we have been learning about friendship. We discussed the qualities of a good friend and realized that they matched so well with our school values! We are in the process of creating a friendship tree to display in our corridor.
