Headmaster's message Friday 10th May 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians, It has been nice to see our students enjoying some slightly cooler temperatures this week which has had a very positive impact on play times as well as PE and Games lessons. We hope the weather will remain like this for some time. Our current Sixth Form students have enjoyed their first few days in our new Sixth Form centre this week. It is great to see how they are utilising this space to prepare for their external examinations. The formal launch of this facility will be in August but we really didn't want to miss out on our pioneer Year 13 group to miss out on utilising this wonderful new space. This week in Pre-Prep we were visited by colleagues from DLTS who came to observe our teaching of phonics. They were very impressed with the structure of what they saw and the progress that our students are making. Also in Pre-Prep excitement is building in Year 2 about out first ever Y2 residential which is happening on 7th June. I believe residentials are o...

Next week we focus on our Mental Health.  In a world that constantly demands more from us, where stressors seem to multiply by the day, the significance of mental health cannot be overstated. As educators, we must equip our young people with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of their mental well-being. The earlier they understand and prioritise their mental health, the better equipped they will be to lead fulfilling and balanced lives; it's a big part of nurturing great global leaders. First and foremost, it's crucial to demystify mental health. Mental health is not just about mental illness. It encompasses a spectrum of emotions, thoughts, and behaviours that influence how individuals perceive and interact with the world around them. By educating young minds about this spectrum, we empower them to recognise and address their emotional needs. Moreover, fostering an open dialogue about mental health helps break down barriers of shame and isolation. Y...

Head of Prep's Message

Dear DBS Prep Parents, As we navigate through another vibrant week here at DBS, I am pleased to share some highlights and updates from our school community. On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming back our Year 7 students, who returned from the highly prestigious VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas, Texas. This was not just a competition, but a platform where our students' hard work and dedication were put to the test on a global scale. Their exemplary teamwork and innovative thinking were evident throughout the competition, and we hope they are rightly proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations to 'Blockade Brigade' for representing DBS with such distinction. Thanks to Mrs. Hall and Mr. Dunphy for their dedication in organising this unforgettable experience. On Wednesday, we hosted prospective students and families for our Prep and Senior Open Day. This event was particularly special as it coincided with the opening week of our new Sixth Form Centre. The...

Head of Pre-Prep's Message

We've had an exciting week here at DBS, with a special visit from teachers of the Denla DLTS program. The focus of their visit was to observe and understand our approach to teaching English in the Pre-Prep department. We're thrilled to share that they were thoroughly impressed with our methods and that we received excellent feedback.  Our showcase included a glimpse into our phonics sessions, integral to laying a strong foundation for language development in our youngest learners. Following this, we seamlessly transitioned into our Talk for Writing lessons, showcasing how we nurture creativity and literacy skills in tandem. These carefully curated programs, RWInc  and Talk for Writing, were selected to provide the best possible education for our Pre-Prep children here at DBS. I am immensely proud of our Pre-Prep teachers and the dedication they demonstrate in delivering these lessons. Through continuous professional development, including teacher INSET days and addition...

U9 Touch mixed vs SHR

Image
The DBS Under 9s took to the field against Shrewsbury last Tuesday for their first 5-a-side, touch rugby match of the season.  They performed fantastically and showed great maturity in how they behaved. We played with 16 students, rolling on and off throughout the game, and all participants showed how well they'd been working in only 2 weeks of rugby training so far.  They scored numerous points and were very disciplined in defence, which hugely limited how many points the opposition managed to score.  Well done to all involved! DBS VEX Robotics Teams in the World Championships in Dallas, USA

Image
Last week 8 of our Prep and Senior Students travelled to Dallas, Texas USA with Mrs Hall and Mr Dunphy to compete in the VEX VIQRC Robotics World Championships.  August, Hug, Rafha and Ryuka, in team 55580B ‘Blockade Brigade’ competed in the Elementary School Competition and Ben, Freddie, Pat and Pump, team 55580C ‘The Final Dogbot’ competed in the Middle School Competition. VEX Robotics is a student-centred programme and the teams are expected to work very independently to design, build, code and drive a robot to complete a number of challenges in the competition.  As you might remember, these 2 teams became Champions of Thailand in February, winning the Excellence Award at the Thai National Championships and securing the only 2 guaranteed places for Thailand at the World Finals. Winning places at Worlds represented a huge success worldwide. There were over 16,900 teams from around the world participating in competitions this year but only 840 teams qualified for a place in t...

Year 1 Robins

Image
The Robins have been wonderful all week, they have been role models for the whole school with their behaviour this week. They have adhered to the classroom policies, showing so much humility, generosity and integrity. I am so proud of their attitude this week. The children have been recording and analysing their plants in the light and dark. They are starting to think like scientists which is very promising. They have been brilliant this half term. They have also learnt their story map in English, so they are now ready to start writing their story next week.

Woodpecker Class

Image
It has been a busy week of learning in the Woodpecker class! The children have work extremely hard in all lessons this week and have completed work to be proud of. In English, they have been practising our story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and can now perform it with confidence. They have also become experts at sequencing the story. In Maths, the children have been using the terminology ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ to compare numbers up to 100. During our Science lesson this week, the children set up an experiment to see what would happen to a plant if it was to grow without any light. The children created different greetings with a friend during our Jigsaw lesson this week and thoroughly enjoyed sharing them with the rest of the class. Well done Woodpeckers!

Fox Class

Image
This week we have been working hard to learn our new Traction Man story map in English. Unlike our previous stories, this one is in continuous present tense and we have focused on how to write such sentences so that we are ready for next week's big write. In Science we explored how electricity has been beneficial to us and what appliances we use now. In Maths we have been investigating the links between the parts and whole of fractions and how multiplication and division play a key role in them.

MD Daisy Class Term 3 Week 3

Image
We are so excited to be able to go back outside to play! We had so much fun this week exploring our Mini Dragons garden again after such a long time spent indoors.  We also went to the Early Years playground and showed our new friends the big slide, bikes and treehouse! We are getting so good at risky play now including climbing, crawling, balancing and even hanging upside down! We love to explore how the weather affects our play and talk about the big grey clouds in the sky making it rain a lot. We can't wait to see rainbows after the rain :)

Hedgehog Class

Image
Hedgehog Class In science, the Hedgehogs have been diving into electricity, exploring safety, importance, and circuit basics. They built circuits, troubleshooting when needed, and understood current flow. Everyone succeeded in making a working buzzer circuit. Well done! In maths, the Hedgehogs have been exploring finding halves, quarters, and thirds of shapes or quantities. They've been applying these skills to tackle reasoning questions and deepen their understanding. Another great week, Hedgehogs!

Jellyfish Class

Image
We are well into our new Talk 4 Write book  'The Little Red Hen' and the children can already follow along with the story and the actions (reminding me sometimes). We have been looking at where flour comes from and exploring its process. Thankfully we have had plenty of opportunities to get outside and play this week. The Jellyfish have shown their kindness and patience with some of the younger students and have enjoyed playing with them and setting a good example. The children are all growing up so fast and it is wonderful to see their relationships change and blossom.

Caterpillar Class - 10th May

Image
We have had lots of fun this week competing our story map for “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance”. We have waltzed and rocked and rolled while using our language skills and actions to re-tell the story. In Maths we have enjoyed singing “10 Current Buns”, “10 Fat Sausages” and “5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer” as we explored the concept of subtraction using the key words and symbols for ‘take away’ and ‘equals’. The children used lots of different objects to show their understanding of how subtraction works. In Jigsaw we talked about friends and what makes a good friend using our ideas to complete the jigsaw as a class. We enjoyed repeating the refrain “make friends, make friends, never, ever break friends” and thinking about what we can do and how we feel when we fall out with our friends. Our writing this week focused on looking at what we can do and what we can’t do yet. We liked celebrating all the brilliant things we can do and coming up with ways to challenge ourselves with what we can’...

Pufferfish class

Image
This week in Pufferfish class we have enjoyed playing with our friends, making pictures and reading stories. We have loved doing lots of exercise in swimming and PE as well as playing in the garden. In phonics we are trying to blend our sounds together and in our talk 4 write sessions we are amazing at retelling ‘The Little Red Hen’. Well done everyone!

Dragonfly Class

Image
This week has been incredibly eventful for our Dragonfly class! We delved deeper into math by learning about subtraction while keeping our addition skills sharp. The highlight was definitely getting on stage to rehearse for our upcoming class assembly. We're bursting with excitement to showcase our hard work and talents to our families. Our progress at swimming has been fantastic, earning praise from our coaches and learning assistants. Additionally, we've been refining our story map for 'Giraffes Can't Dance,' immersing ourselves in creative storytelling. Finally, we relished the opportunity to play outside as the temperature cooled down, enjoying some well-deserved outdoor fun. It's been a fulfilling and dynamic week of learning and growth for us all!

Sunflower Class

Image
This week in the Sunflower Class our focus has been on the days of the week.  Each day we have been building the children’s vocabulary by talking about what day it is “today”, what day it was “yesterday” and what day it will be “tomorrow”.  We have also learnt that each day is represented by a different colour in Thailand so we have also been exploring at colour again, this time looking at how colours can be darker and lighter when you mix in different colours such as white and black. With the range of weather we have experienced this week, we have also revisited our theme from last week.  The children loved looking out the window at the rain during the week and also noticed how windy it was.   We hope you all have a lovely weekend. The Sunflower Class

Ladybird Week - 10th May

Image
I t's been an exciting and enriching week in the Ladybirds class, filled with learning, friendship, and creativity. Here's a glimpse into our busy week: Exploring Subtraction: This week, our Ladybirds embarked on a mathematical journey as we introduced the concept of subtraction. Through engaging subtraction stories and hands-on activities using resources like tens frames, our little mathematicians delved into the world of take away. It's been incredible to witness their enthusiasm and understanding blossom as they grasp this foundational mathematical concept. Jigsaw: Celebrating Friendship: In our Jigsaw sessions, we've been focusing on the theme of "What Makes a Good Friend?" Our Ladybirds engaged in heartfelt discussions about the qualities of a good friend and explored the joy of spreading kindness. From giving high-fives, smiles, and hugs to emphasising the importance of effective communication in resolving conflicts, our Ladybirds have been nurturing p...
