Hedgehog Class

Image
Hedgehog Class In Hedgehog class this week we received a very special announcement as part of our hook for our new focus book in writing . A 'prince' had sent us a video and gave us some tasks to do in the dark! It left us confused and questioning why the prince was in darkness. We also 'found' darkness in science this week. We explored what darkness actually means. We went on a hunt to 'find' darkness and the different light sources around the school. It was wonderful to welcome you into Hedgehog class for parent time on Wednesday! The children were very proud to share all of their hard work and learning. In maths , we have been solving measurement questions. We explored how to work out the difference between 2 given measurements and comparing length and height. In P.E we have been learning about speed and precision in movements. Hedgehogs were practising by picking up objects and throwing into targets with precision. Another super week, Hedgehog Class!

Head of Senior School Message - Gender equality: better but not good enough yet

Image
International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration dedicated to honouring the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. Beyond merely recognising the struggles women have faced, this day serves as a reminder of the importance of gender equality and the need for continued progress in all aspects of life. In communities worldwide, women play pivotal roles in leadership positions. From educators shaping young minds to parents nurturing the next generation, and students displaying resilience and determination, women contribute significantly to community development. Teachers, with their passion and commitment, impart knowledge that goes beyond textbooks, instilling values and empowering students to reach their full potential. In addition, to the talks on famous and amazing women, the Senior School were lucky today to hear from female leaders within our own community talk and reflect on their own personal journeys. It was great to hea

Dear Parents and Guardians, Last weekend we held our first Thai University fair. It was great to see so many attendees and was a great opportunity for parents and students to hear first hand about the admissions process for several universities. We had a big week of sport last weekend. Our U13 boys and girls were competing in the U13 FOBISIA games. The level of competition was extremely high and in some games, luck was not on our side but we still finished in respectable mid-table positions in basketball, swimming and athletics. We also had under 11 FOBISIA tennis last weekend and our squad were on top of their game. All of our players were unbeaten on the first day making it to the quarterfinals. Preme and Elle both made it to the finals, finishing in an admirable second place. Well done to all of our young athletes for an amazing weekend of sport last weekend and to our PE teachers for giving up their weekends to accompany them. Today was International Women's Day. This morning I

Head of Prep's Message

Dear DBS Prep School Parents and Guardians, It has been fantastic to see many parents engaging with events at school this week. From Tuesday's  Parent Forum, Wednesday's Year 5&6 parents reps meeting, and Thursday's workshop outlining the changes that occur when your children progress into Year 7 at DBS, there has been a lot of information sharing and insightful discussions held. Thank you to all parents who have attended and contributed to our growth and development. Our students have been very busy both in and out of the classroom. Yesterday, our Year 4-6 Pre-Scholars participated in a writing workshop with writing guru and author Andrew Jennings. As the workshop was UK-based, it was an extended school day for our young writers, and they were beautifully engaged with the creative workshop after the school day. Soon, we will launch details of a story-writing competition for all Prep students, and I hope many children will get involved. We have had some impressive eff

Thai University Fair. 8 Universities representing over 25 faculties visited the DBS campus for a morning of learning and collaboration

Image
Saturday saw DBS' inaugural Thai University Fair. 8 Universities representing over 25 faculties visited the DBS campus for a morning of learning and collaboration.  Families had the opportunity to attend workshops on Portfolios, Career Trends and Life at University where they learnt how DBS supports students in these areas and the best advice from university representatives.  Other families took the opportunity to learn more about the Curriculum and Well-being support in the Senior School and how this prepares students for their pathway to University.  It was a pleasure to see so many insightful conversations happening between students, families and the University representatives and we hope students left feeling inspired about their future options. Should you wish to discuss your child's pathway in more detail or have any follow-up questions from the event please reach out to the Careers and University Counselling department at careeers@dbsbangkok.ac.th

U13 Boys and Girls Football vs Harrow

Image
U13 Girls Football vs Harrow In their first game of the season, the U13 girls' football team took on a tough Harrow team. The team showed determination and teamwork despite the challenge. Although the match was difficult, there were positives that we can take from the game and work on over the coming weeks. Well done girls! U13 Boys Football vs Harrow Coming into this game we knew that Harrow were a good team who have been playing football throughout the year while we were just starting football season and were yet to have any real training sessions, despite this the boys were determined to show that we mean business.  From the very beginning we started to put them on their heels and played attacking football. We went 1-0 up from a quick combination by Heng and Luke which soon after was equalled by Harrow to make it 1-1.  We managed to hold them off until the latter stages of the game where we lacked some fitness, Harrow ended up scoring and winning the game. The boys showed grea

Year 1 and 2 Creative Curriculum Week

Image
Year 1 and 2 embarked on their second creative curriculum week; this time with a focus on History. Using the theme of space, they have travelled through the milky way galaxy learning all about astronauts, space travel and the planets in our solar system.  Over the week, they have learnt about the first moon landing and had a go at creating a news broadcast for this; how astronauts live in the International Space Station and some of the challenges they face up there.  To celebrate the week, children went on a trip to the Bangkok Planetarium, where they got to see some space artefacts up close as well as enjoy a show in the Planetarium, where they felt like they were in space. Children saw how the stars form different constellations and what the inside of the sun looks like!

Bumblebee Class

Image
What a super week in Bumblebee class. We have recently started our new talk for writing topic of Farmer Duck. Last week we were surprised to find Farmer Duck had dropped off some seeds in our class. This week we planted the seeds. We thought carefully about what the seeds need to grow, and hypothesised what the seeds might grow into.  In maths we have been learning all about 3D shapes. We have been modelling with playdough, printing, and building, all to investigate the components of these 3D shapes.  In writing we have been writing about what we see on a farm. Not only did we write about all the details we could see but we also used adjectives to describe the scene.  As always we have been superstars in our phonics group. Trying so hard to fred talk, blend, write and read.  Well done bumblebees!

Sunflower Class

Image
This week we have continued our exploration of colour, linked to the stories “Orange, Bear, Apple, Pear” by Emily Gravett and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?” By Bill Martin Jr and illustrated by Eric Carle.  At the art table the children have been painting different coloured bears each day whilst exploring what happens when you mixed two colours together.  Then on Thursday we mixed several colours together to make a brown bear! We have also been exploring different parts of DBS, both inside and outside.  These trips are a great opportunity for the children to extend their knowledge and understanding of the world, as they see more of the school environment and the people in our wider community. We also noticed lots of different colours as we walked around! Have a lovely weekend. Miss Sarah, Miss O, Miss Ploy and Miss Angel

Jellyfish Class

Image
It has been lovely to have a healthy and full class this week. The children have been looking at the life cycle of butterflies and frogs. They have continued to learn and develop their programming skills using the bee bots and have been looking at symmetry and making their own symmetrical patterns using numicon. We have also been exploring the new playroom and keeping out of the heat in the library for extra story times. Next week looks to be just as fun-packed with the children taking part in the school-wide STEAM Week. The TeePee is here and ready to be woven by the children using old clothes and scrap fabrics. We will also be investigating and getting hands-on with soap and bubbles.

Growth - Butterfly Class

Image
This week the in the Butterfly class, it has been a whirlwind of excitement and discovery! The children delved into the fascinating world of 3D shapes through hands-on activities like building, shape hunts, and painting. As storytellers, they were captivated by the story of "Farmer Duck," expanding their vocabulary and language skills with enthusiasm as they acted out the story and fun learning new words. The children have demonstrated confidence in our upcoming assembly in the Araya Hall, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to show their talents to our families. Alongside these adventures, we had fun planting seeds left by a friendly farmer. We are waiting eagerly for the the seeds to sprout, teaching us valuable lessons about growth and the importance of sunshine and water. Well done Butterflies! Enjoy a restful weekend. Mrs Grassi, Miss Pa and Miss Chawi xxx

On Wednesday, the children were thrilled to have their grown ups join them in the classroom and show them all the hard work they have been doing! Well done on another fantastic week Woodpeckers - keep up the good

Daisy Class

Image
This week the Daisy class continued their exploration into colours with the classic tale, 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' and 'Baa Baa Black Sheep'. We have had so much fun learning to 'read' the story all by ourselves, by using cues and hand gestures to help us understand the order of the animals.  We had a great time using a variety of art materials to create process art based on our story of the week. The children love getting their hands covered in paint!  We also explored the Numicon to delve deeper into number awareness, and explored rainbow patterns in our classroom.

Ladybird Week - 8th March

Image
It's been an exciting and educational week in our classroom as we've delved into the fascinating world of plants and shapes. Here's a glimpse into what we've been up to... Last week, Farmer Duck left us a special letter asking for our help and a packet of seeds to plant. Inspired by this, we've been learning all about the life cycle of plants, what they need to grow, and their importance in our world. We've had hands-on experience planting seeds in little bags with tissue paper, ensuring they have plenty of water, and observing them closely as they begin to sprout on our classroom window. We're eagerly awaiting the day when we can transfer them into soil and continue to nurture them as they grow. In literacy, we've been immersing ourselves in farm-themed activities, sparked by our recent encounters with Farmer Duck. Using our phonics knowledge, we've been exploring the sights and sounds of a farm and using descriptive language to write about our obse

Fox Class

Image
This week has been filled lots of cross - curricular links! In English our focus text is about a Prince who when he became King decided to ban the dark! We explored reasons behind this and what questions we could ask the King before having a go at 'hot seating.' This tied in wonderfully with Science and Art as we are learning about Light and explored places that are light and dark ; whilst in Art we have started to learn about stained-glass windows and their importance.

Caterpillar Class - 8th March

Image
Another amazing and busy week for the Caterpillar Class. We have given our seeds water and light to help them sprout and are looking forward to planting them next week. Maths this week has focused on 3D shapes and we loved going on a shape hunt finding spheres, cubes, cuboids and pyramids in everyday objects. The highlight of the week was every child visit to the woodwork area where we learnt how to use a hammer, saw and drill while exploring different materials to make boats, houses and animals. We are looking forward to showing everyone our finished creations next week. In the classroom we have also enjoyed exploring some slime. We have talked about how the texture changed from sticky to smooth and stretchy and have tried to see who can stretch it the farthest.

Seahorse Class

Image
We have had another jam packed week in Seahorse Class. We continued our Talk 4 Write story The Very Hungry Caterpillar and are learning the story with actions. Focusing on healthy eating, we have been talking about how healthy food makes us strong and is good for our bodies and we can categorise healthy and unhealthy food. We have also exploring at life cycles of different animals such as caterpillars, frogs and chickens. We are looking forward to more fun next week.

Dragonfly Class

Image
This week in the Dragonfly class was filled with engaging explorations and activities. We delved into the world of 3D shapes, comparing their properties and identifying the 2D shapes they are composed of, all while embarking on an exciting shape scavenger hunt. In English, we dedicated our efforts to crafting sentences and labeling a vibrant farm scene picture. The highlight of our week was undoubtedly the opening of the soft play room in the library, where we had a fantastic time climbing and swinging from the monkey bars, offering a refreshing break from the outdoor heat. As we look ahead, we eagerly anticipate STEAM Week, where we'll delve into the critical topic of sustainability and examine the evolving state of our planet Earth throughout history.

Pufferfish class

This week we have had lots of fun in Pufferfish class. We have continued reading our story of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" using pictures and puppets to help us retell the story. We have continued our creative development by making lots of pictures about our book including caterpillars, butterflies and leaves and we have continued to learn lots of new sounds in phonics, practicing our blending and writing. Well done everyone. Have a lovely weekend and see you next week!

Magpie Class

Image
We have had another lovely week in Magpie Class! In science we have started to learn about sound and have thought about what sounds we like and dislike! In Maths this week we practiced counting in our 2s, 5s and 10s.  Our story in English for this half term is “Where’s my Teddy.” The children came into school, earlier in the week, to find paw prints on the floor and Miss Doody’s teddy missing! The children then spent the day taking part in activities relating to forests! In Art we explored natural materials outside and sorted them into different groups including colour and shape. In English children then drew and described their own woodland setting! What a fantastic day!
