Headmaster's message Friday 29th September

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, This week we held our Wai Kru celebrations where we held two ceremonies to celebrate the event, thank our teachers and wish our students well in the years ahead. We also held a lovely lunchtime concert in the D5 Dining Hall showcasing some fantastic musical talent. Pre-Prep and Prep parents reps meetings took place this week and we have the Senior School meeting next week. I have been really impressed by the feedback that parents have given us. It is always useful to receive these suggestions and there is much that we can take forward to help improve the school. Next week we will also hold a Pre-Prep parent forum which is open to all Pre-prep parents and the following week we will hold a Prep parent forum. The senior event happened earlier in the term on a saturday. In these meetings, there will be a presentation from the Senior Leadership Team and an opportunity for parents to ask questions. After half term, we will also host a parents' coffee morning o

Deputy Headmaster's Message - The Joy of Science

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, There is a change in the atmosphere at school as we reach the end of the week… the anticipation is building as we approach our annual Science Week, a much-cherished event in our school calendar. This year, we delve into the wonders and mysteries of the 'Atmosphere,' a theme that promises to unravel exciting phenomena and ignite curiosity in our students. Science Week is not merely a showcase of intriguing experiments and flashy demonstrations (although we do love those!). It is a golden opportunity for our students to explore the intricate beauty of the world around us, ask questions, and seek answers. This year's focus on the atmosphere will see our students investigating weather patterns, exploring climate change, and understanding the delicate balance that sustains life on our planet. The joy of Science Week cultivates a love for learning in our students, as well as encouraging critical thinking, and it also fosters a sense of wonder and inqui

Head of Senior School - Choices

Image
Very soon our Year 9s and later on this term our Year 11s are going to be asked to make some subject choices. IGCSE options represent a significant milestone in a student's educational journey, with far-reaching implications for their academic and future career prospects. The significance of these choices cannot be emphasised enough, as they serve as the cornerstone of personal and professional development. In this crucial phase, self-efficacy, or one's belief in their own ability to succeed, assumes paramount importance. When students carefully select subjects that align with their interests and strengths, they enhance their self-efficacy. This newfound confidence instils a positive attitude towards learning, motivating them to overcome obstacles and achieve their objectives. The process of making informed choices empowers IGCSE students to tap into the potential of self-efficacy, setting them on a path towards a more rewarding and successful future. These choices not only sha

Head of Prep's message

Dear DBS Prep Parents, Yesterday, we celebrated a special event in the DBS calendar: Wai Kru Day. This was my second Wai Kru Day, and I feel that I missed out for over 20 years of teaching in the UK, as there is nothing like this there. The Prep School was part of two ceremonies of paying thanks, showing respect to teachers, and committing to hard work for the year ahead. Within the ceremonies, the student hosts shared details of the history and traditions of the event, and we enjoyed the beautiful music associated with this wonderful occasion. I had the privilege of closing one ceremony and letting the students know we are here for them, supporting them on every step of their educational journey. Here's to the year ahead and working together with humility, generosity, courage, integrity and empathy. Thank you to the Thai department for teaching and preparing the students for Wai Kru and giving the teachers and LAs the opportunity to share this wonderful aspect of Thai culture. T

Dear Pre-Prep Parents, It has been an exciting week filled with celebrations, and our focus has been on sports, fitness, and the valuable lessons they teach our young learners. This week, we had the pleasure of inviting parents to observe our Nursery and Reception swimming lessons. It was a fantastic opportunity for you to witness firsthand how our dedicated swim coaches approach teaching our youngest learners. Your presence encouraged and motivated our little swimmers, and we appreciate your support in nurturing their aquatic skills. Wednesday marked our annual Year 1 and 2 Sports Day, and we were thrilled to see so many parents in attendance, cheering on their children. The event was truly a sight to behold, with a colourful sea of flags and banners created by the Early Years children to support the athletes in their respective houses. Congratulations to the Balmoral Parents for winning the prize of 25 extra house points for being the best dressed parents on the day! Sports Day sho

The U11's girls football team put on another fantastic performance against Shrewsbury International School. The girls worked so hard as a team to defend Shrewsbury's oncoming attacks and then they were able to turn this possession into some great forward play which resulted in some well-taken goals. Every player made a difference and their hard work in training is showing on the pitch. Well done for another amazing performance team, on to the next one! View Gallery

The U9’s boys football team displayed great teamwork, determination and resilience to play out a well-fought draw against Shrewsbury. The boys worked hard as a team to defend and they put themselves into every tackle. In attack, they showed great forward-thinking with passing and movement off the ball, which was fantastic to see. Overall, the team played their part in a fantastic spectacle and I can’t wait for the next match. Well done team! View Gallery

Celebrating Tradition and Respect: Wai Kru Day at DBS

Image
Wai Kru Day, also known as Teacher's Day, is a Thai tradition that dates back centuries. It's a day when students pay homage and show deep respect to their teachers and mentors. The ceremony is not just about a simple "thank you." It's a profound expression of gratitude for the knowledge, guidance, and wisdom imparted by those who have shaped our educational journey. As we gather at DBS to celebrate Wai Kru Day, let us not forget the wisdom of the past that shapes our future. Let us honour our teachers, appreciate the knowledge they've imparted, and continue to nurture a culture of respect, gratitude, and learning that will benefit generations to come.

🎢πŸ₯ DBS Music Update • 29 Sep 2023

LUNCHTIME CONCERT We had the pleasure of hosting another inspiring lunchtime concert yesterday (28 Sep), showcasing the incredible musical pursuits of our students. This series has been instrumental -quite literally - in offering a unique platform for our aspiring musicians to share their passion and progress.  A REHEARSAL STAGE FOR GREATER ENDEAVOURS As we gear up for the upcoming Music tour to Malaysia, the lunchtime concert series has served as a valuable platform for soloists and ensembles who are going on tour to refine their performance skills. This relaxed setting allows students to receive constructive feedback from both peers and staff within the Music department, all of which contributes to a well-rounded musical education. Our warmest congratulations to all performers for sharing their progress and passion with us. We look forward to many more such enriching events in the future. 🎢 WEST SIDE STORY MASTERCLASS - AUDITION SUBMISSION Next week, International School Bangkok (IS
