Headmaster's message Friday 2nd February 2024

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, We have had another excellent week this week and it was nice to see some improvements to the air quality as the week came to an end. It was very nice to end the week with a parent coffee morning and thank you to the parents who came along. It is always nice to have a chat in informal settings like this and to get a feel for what areas we can continue to improve in. This week we also held two Open Days which were for both prospective and existing parents. We hope that parents left these with a good understanding of how we structure our curriculum and also how we look after students' wellbeing. We celebrated our first major wins in the BISA tournaments last weekend with our U9 girls winning the tournament and the boys finishing 2nd. This bodes very well for success in future years in these tournaments as we build strong teams from the bottom. The introduction of Volleyball as part of the BISA league has also gone well. In the last 2 weeks our U15 boys and

Deputy Headmaster's Message - Keeping our Children Safe Online

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, As we approach Safer Internet Week next week, I will speak on a topic that has increasing importance - keeping our children safe online. In today’s digital age, the internet has become an indispensable part of our lives, offering limitless opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection. When I first moved to Asia, 22 years ago, keeping in contact with family in the UK meant a phone call once every few weeks. The advancements in online technology such as Facetime has been fantastic in making families feel closer than they actually are. However, this advancement in technology also presents unique challenges and risks for families, especially for our children. The safety of our students in the online world is a concern that we at DBS take very seriously. The internet, while a valuable educational tool, can expose children to various risks, including inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and online predators. As such, fostering a safe online environment

Head of Senior School Message: Parent - Teacher - Pupil Partnership

Image
In the journey of a student's education, the collaboration between parents and teachers plays a pivotal role in shaping their academic and personal development. This partnership is not merely a supportive network but a fundamental catalyst for success. The recent Open Day was a testament to the commitment of our parents, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their engagement. Attending workshops is a cornerstone in enhancing this partnership. These sessions provide valuable insights into the teaching methodologies, curriculum, and strategies employed in the classroom. Moreover, workshops offer a platform for open dialogue, fostering a shared understanding of the student's needs and aspirations. Effective communication is the linchpin of this collaboration. Regular updates, feedback, and discussions create a seamless bridge between home and school, ensuring that both educators and parents are well-informed about the student's progress and challenges. It is through this

U11 players also proudly represented the school and demonstrated superb sportsmanship and effort in their respective tournaments. Well done to all! We opened our doors for the Prep School Open Day this Wednesday, and it was fantastic to see a significant turnout of parents who enthusiastically participated in the morning's events. The day's highlight was the school's guided tours conducted by our DBS students, who showcased the vibrant learning environment and shared their experiences with genuine enthusiasm. The collaboration between parents and the school community w

U9 and U11 boys and girls compete in only our second ever BISA tournament, in Basketball

Image
Last weekend saw the U9 and U11 boys and girls compete in only our second ever BISA tournament, in Basketball. The U9 boys played at Kings whilst the girls played at St Andrews and the U11's all played at Shrewsbury Riverside. We are delighted to let you know that across the 4 tournaments our U9 Girls WON the 'A' BISA tournament by beating Kings in the finals (and did not lose a match throughout the group stages). Our boys won all 3 of their group games convincingly against tough competition and were heroic in the final but eventually losing to St Andrew's in a well fought match. Our U11's had a slightly tougher day against strong competition, at Shrewsbury, but ultimately we're extremely proud that they showed the Dragon spirit and never gave up at any stage. We learn as we go but we are extraordinarily proud of the students involved in the BISA tournaments but also all of the fixtures throughout the term so far. We are building a culture of determination, grit

🎸🏅 2024 FOBISIA Battle of the Bands

Image
Pickle Town grab gold! On Saturday, 27 Jan, DBS was represented on stage at one of the highly contested events in the FOBISIA events calendar – the annual Battle of the Bands competition. This journey started from the audition round, where our Key Stage 3 band Pickle Town emerged from over 60 entries which were submitted, and progressed onto the live finals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Here are some video highlights from the trip: With their medley performance of Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and Metallica’s ‘Sandman’, Pickle Town went on to impress the judges and finished in the top tier with a Gold award – the highest award category of the competition. The progress they have demonstrated since their debut at the 2023 edition of the competition a year ago is down to the effort and practice they have put in to continually improve their stagecraft and musicianship. Well done to BM (8KKE), Bright (8CCE), Cheetah (9RMM), Lucas (8CCE), My Friend (9RMM) and Tee (9ATA for such an electrifying pe

Head Shoulders Knees and Toes 🎶 - 🌻 Sunflower Class

Image
This week's rhyme is “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'' which lots of the children are very familiar with.  They have been joining in with great enthusiasm and we have been exploring doing the actions both quickly and slowly.  This rhyme has also been a great opportunity for developing vocabularly related to parts of our bodies through the daily creative and sensory activities. The children now have a growing repertoire of nursery rhymes and we are really looking forward to sharing some of these with you at our “Rhyme Time” Family Time next Wednesday 7th February at 1.30pm.  We hope you all have a family member who can join us for this great opportunity to spend time with your child in their classroom. Have a lovely weekend. Miss Sarah, Miss O, Miss Ploy and Miss Angel

Ladybird Week - 2nd February

Image
Another very busy week for us in Ladybird Class.  In Maths, the Ladybirds have been on an exciting journey through the concept of time. Using sand timers, the class embarked on a challenge to discover how many star jumps they could achieve within different time periods. This hands-on exploration not only brought the concept of time to life but also added a playful twist to our physical activities. The children then had discussions about the various times of the day, the introduction of clocks opened up a new world of discovery, with a particular focus on 'o'clock.' Counting the hours and understanding the structure of the day has been a delightful part of our time-themed adventures. Furthermore, the Ladybirds began exploring the concept of days in a week, unraveling the mystery of where each day falls within the weekly calendar. For Talk4Write the Ladybirds have been weaving their imaginations into the well-loved tale of 'Three Billy Goats Gruff.' Continuing their s

Woodpecker

Image
The Woodpeckers have been extremely busy week full of learning and rehearsals for our Class Assembly and Chinese New Year. In English this week, the children have written their own versions of the story How to Catch a Star and shared them confidently with the class. In Maths, we have been exploring measuring length and height using centimetres. The children blew me away with their creativity on Thursday, when making toy cars out of recyclable materials! And they finished the week with a fantastic performance for our Class Assembly, showcasing all the wonderful learning we have Doen so far this year. Well done Woodpeckers - you are all superstars!

Mini Dragons Daisy Class

Image
The Daisy class have been enjoying learning about colours of the rainbow this week!  We have been making large rainbow art, singing 'I Can Sing a Rainbow' and experimenting with what happens when colours mix. We love to play with coloured gems, and have been learning the names of other colours such as pink, black, brown and white!  We have been reading 'Pete the Cat and His New Shoes', and rocking out to the cool song in the story. We have been playing lots of instruments this week also, which is a lovely way to see the children's confidence develop. Keep on rocking, Daisies!

Caterpillar Class - 2nd February

Image
A very busy week full of fun and excitement. Our rehearsals for Chinese New Year are in full swing and the children are looking forward to showing you their performance next Friday 9th. In our writing this week we have been using our imaginations to think about what might happen next to the troll after he has fallen off the bridge. The children are all proud of their writing work this week and enjoyed using their own ideas in their books. Maths this week has looked at the concept of time. From thinking about the days of the week and what different things we do to understanding that time can be measured in long or short amounts we have completed lots of practical activities using the sand timers in class. One of our favourite parts of the week was being introduced to a bee-bot, a small programmable robot that we can make move forwards, backwards, left and right. Everyone had a go at seeing if they could make the bee-bot go to different parts of the mat.

Fox Class

Image
This week we have been learning how to divide by building on last week's lessons on sharing equally. We have explored how odd and even numbers help us to decide whether a number can be shared equally. In English we have learned how to turn a bullet point idea into a complete sentence by adding in extra words and details. Finally in art we designed our own windchimes, which we will begin making soon.

Butterflies Class

Image
Well done Butterflies! You have been bridge builders, artists, Chinese New Year celebration organisers, encouraging friends, kind, thoughtful, story-tellers, fantastic climbers, space negotiators and inside play experts. We love seeing your progress week on week and can't wait for another exciting week with you all next week.  Mrs Grassi, Miss Pa and Miss Chawi xxx

Bumblebee Class

Image
Bumblebee class have been busy bees this week! In maths we have been exploring time in the form of seconds, minutes and weeks! We were set challenges to see how quickly we could complete them in 1, 2, and 5 minute intervals.  In talk for writing, we brainstormed and wrote ‘what does the troll do next?’. Our ideas were so imaginative and unique! One troll decided to eat vegetables instead, one fell into a volcano, and one told its troll Mummy.  In Jigsaw we learned about the importance of using kind words to encourage each other, and the impact of unkind words. We ended the session by saying something kind about each member of our class.  We are so excited about upcoming events such as Chinese New Year and international day. We have been so busy preparing, and are looking forward to showcasing our learning.

Hedgehog Class

Image
Hedgehog Class This week in maths, we have been learning all about odd and even numbers, exploring if we can share them equally between groups. We practiced our learning through dice games and problem solving questions! In our art we have been designing our wind chimes for the Selfish Giant’s garden, we learnt about each feature of a wind chime and its function. We can’t wait to start creating them over the next couple of weeks! For writing, Hedgehogs learnt what a non-fiction text is and when we use it. Next week we will be writing a leaflet all about Thai festivals - How exciting! A super week of learning in Hedgehog Class, well done!

Seahorse Class

Image
This week in Seahorse Class, we have been focusing on identifying and verbalising our feelings. We have spoken about our coloured zones of regulation, what they mean and how we say what we feel. In phonics, we have started learning two sounds a week ‘d’ and ‘t’. We have been learning our phonics really fast and everyone is making great progress! In Talk for Write, we can now confidently recite the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and will be moving on to change the story in class next week. Well done Seahorses!

Dragonfly Class

Image
Happy February! This week in the Dragonfly class has been super exciting as we've been getting ready for the Chinese New Year celebration. We've been practicing and having a great time preparing for the wonderful events coming up in the next two weeks. Our days have been buzzing with activity, but we've been staying focused by setting goals and working hard together. This week, we had some important discussions about how we can support and cheer on our friends, especially when things get challenging. We learned about the power of teamwork and encouraging each other during difficult tasks. We're looking forward to the festivities ahead, and we can't wait to share the joy and happiness of Chinese New Year with everyone.

Pufferfish class

Image
Pufferfish class have had another lovely week. We have used our imagination and creative skills to make lots of different artwork including butterflies, caves and binoculars. The children have continued some super learning in our carpet sessions, learning 2 new sounds in phonics, sharing our feelings and emotions in phonics, and retelling our story in talk 4 write. Pufferfish have also developed lots of physical skills in our playroom and in their swimming lessons. Well done Pufferfish!

Tulip Class

Image
This week the Tulips focused on the songs “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” and "One Little Finger”. In the song  "One Little Finger” we practiced pointing up and down.  Every day we learned the names of the different parts of our bodies through play and fun activities. We colored self-portraits, made faces with Play-Doh, made sandals for our feet, and much more. The Tulips really showed their independence this week. They did a great job putting on their shoes, lining up, eating lunch, washing their hands, and safely walking to the garden. They engaged in some great play and are learning to take turns with their friends. We are excited to see what big steps they take next week! - Miss Taryna, Mr. Gino, and Miss Pair

Magpie Class

Image
We have had another busy week in Magpie Class! The children have finished rewriting the story of How to Catch a Star and they should be really proud of themselves! We have also had a lot of practice in preparation for Chinese New Year next week! In our science lesson this week, we investigated how we use pushes and pulls when out in the playground! We also love going to the library every Friday afternoon and sharing books with all of our friends!
Image
We have had a very colourful week in the Jellyfish class. The children have been really excited about mixing colours since our artist's visit last week. They have been loving the communal process art (sorry about the mess) and now the classroom is looking wonderful and getting ready for next week's Family Time visit on Wednesday. They have also been mixing secondary colors with Play-Doh so they can get creative in 3D too.  Next week we will carry on our art to help us learn about and celebrate Chinese New Year. So expect, some beautiful pieces to add to your walls at home. Have a fantastic weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Sea Turtle Class

Image
This week in Sea Turtle class we have been continuing our fantastic phonics work! So many children are able to recognise the sounds that different words start with, and have been active and involved learners in changing our story in our Talk 4 Write sessions. Using our story map of 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' to help us and our great imaginations, we have changed some settings in the story to 'a castle', 'a rainbow' and 'lotus'! The children have been very busy exploring new activities in their indoor environment this week, including new number games and arts and crafts activities. Another great week!

Y1 Robins Newsletter 02.02.24

Image
The Robins have had a busy week with their CNY rehersals, but they have had so much fun performing and perfecting their songs. In Maths the children have been learning all about length and height. They have used a ruler to measure different classroom objects, they have used centremetres, and done a really good job of using it accurately. Despite being busy these last few weeks, the Robins have tried so hard and done amazing work. They finished their narrative story on 'How to catch a star'. They read their stories for the class and they were fantastic, I am so proud of how far they have come since term 1. Well done Robins!
