Headmaster's message Friday 24th May

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, This has been a busy week for out Sports Department as we celebrate out Sports Awards evenings and also run our swimming gala events. It was fantastic to celebrate our sporting achievements in sports this year. We have won 7 BISA tournaments this year compared to 2 GBAC tournaments last year and the level of competition in BISA is much higher. We also won 4 runner up trophies in FOBISIA competitions. In my speeches, I highlighted the 3 main reasons for taking part in school sports whilst also focusing on the positive benefits to mental health, particularly around processing loss and developing resilience. As the academic year draws to a close, we are already planning for next season and are putting in place some developments that should lead to further success. We are building from the bottom in sports and now have very strong U9 and U11 teams who will continue to develop as they move up through the school. We have had 4 swimming galas with Sandringham winni

Deputy Headmaster's Message - Lifelong learners

Image
Dear Parents and Guardians, On Friday 31st May, the school will be closed, but our academic team will be having a full day of work in the form of an INSET (In-Service Education and Training) day. We have several INSET days throughout the academic year at DBS which are an essential part of our school's calendar and are designed to provide our teachers with opportunities to continuously improve their teaching practice and develop new skills. INSET days are a common practice in British schools, and they allow teachers to step away from the classroom to engage in professional development activities. At DBS, these activities can take many forms, including training sessions, workshops, team-building activities, and guest speakers. By attending these events, our teachers gain new insights into best practices and the latest trends in education. One of the main benefits of INSET days is that they allow teachers to stay up-to-date with the latest educational research and theories. This knowl

Head of Senior Message - Importance of competing

Image
As the school is about to host the World Scholars' Skittles Round my thoughts go on to the importance of such events. Participating in academic competitions is a valuable opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones and experience significant personal and intellectual growth. Engaging in these contests encourages students to push their boundaries, fostering resilience and adaptability. By challenging themselves in unfamiliar and competitive environments, students develop critical thinking skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of their subject matter. Moreover, academic competitions offer a platform for students to showcase their talents and hard work on a broader stage. This recognition can boost their confidence and motivation, driving them to pursue higher levels of academic and personal achievement. Competitions also provide a unique opportunity for students to interact with peers who share similar interests and passions

Head of Prep's Message

Image
Dear DBS Prep Parents, It's been a week of contrast at DBS: concentration, celebration and competition! In the classroom, students have been focusing hard on their end-of-year assessments. The corridors have been quieter than usual as teachers have set the tone for students to demonstrate their progress. We hosted a vibrant and inspiring evening in the Araya Hall on Wednesday to celebrate a superb year of sporting success. Prep students who have represented DBS in both the BISA conference and Fobisia events were recognised and rewarded with great speeches, souvenir prizes and rather spectacular trophies. We also enjoyed magnificent competition in the pool as each section enjoyed their House Swim Gala. All three events were hotly contested, and the atmosphere was electric thanks to great parental support. Thank you to all involved, and well done to every student who took part. Some of our Year 8 students took part in the first community visit to Rainbow House. Following their mini e

Kiztopia time

Image
All of the Reception children went on a trip to Kiztopia at Central Westville. This was an amazing opportunity for the children to not only let off steam and challenge their climbing skills and ability to negotiate space, but also to explore the different ‘jobs’ showcased there. The children loved pretending to milk the cow in the ‘farm’, whilst other children enjoyed using money at the till in the ‘supermarket’ and others’ enjoyed visiting the ‘dentist’, linking the experience with our visit from the dentist last week! Trips and experiences outside of school are always really exciting for the children and this particular trip helped the children have a better knowledge and understanding of the various jobs people do in our community.  Thank you also to all the families who came to join us for our ‘Family Time’. It was a great success and the children were as always so pleased to be able to share their learning with you. I know you are as proud of them all as we are.  Well done, Butter

Fox Class

Image
What a week we have had in the Fox Class! This week we had an enrichment day to conclude our unit on Traction Man! We enjoyed making a miniature bedroom for Traction Man, using a range of art and design techniques we have learned. Then we made a 'thaumatrope' - which is a Victorian toy that is almost like an optical illusion. The class were quite skeptical at first but when they saw it with their own eyes, they were so impressed! Finally we baked cupcakes for Traction Man (and ourselves) as a treat for all the hard work. We learned how to cream the butter and sugar, beat the eggs and even sifted the flour and at last decorated them before tasting them in snack time.

Hedgehog

Image
Hedgehogs The Hedgehogs started the week with a swimming gala, and it was wonderful to see all the children being supportive of their house teams and classmates. A big well done to all the children who swam! On Wednesday, the Hedgehogs had an enrichment day filled with various activities centered around our book, "Traction Man." They loved baking cakes, making a 'Traction Man' house, and designing a house for him. This week in maths, the Hedgehogs had a lot of fun learning about position and direction! They explored placing counters correctly by following instructions, working wonderfully in partner groups. Each student took turns giving and following directions such as "place the red counter to the right of the blue counter." We focused on understanding the terms 'above' and 'below'. We had an amazing end to the week with our assembly, which truly showcased all their superb learning and hard work. I am super proud of each and every one o

Year 1 Robins

Image
The Robins have had such a fun week. They have engaged well in their enrichment day today. They had so much fun making pottery and baking a fruit cake.  I am excited to see their plant pots come back! Then we can paint them and design them so they look amazing.  Lots of our students won their gold house point certificate this week, showing how hard they have worked over this year. The rest are so close to reaching that goal so stay tuned for more gold certificates being given out! Have a great weekend all! Best wishes, Mr. Ashmore and Miss Ploii

Woodpecker Class

Image
The Woodpeckers thoroughly enjoyed the Swimming Gala at the beginning of this week and were eager to show how well they have been doing in their swimming lessons. In Maths this week, the children have been learning about money. They have been looking at coins and how much value they have and have been working out amounts to but items at our Woodpecker Class Shop. During our Art lesson this week, the children had fantastic concentration and focus to complete a replica of Kandinksy’s Concentric Circles. In English this week, we have been looking at the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts and how to write an information text about Giants. Well done on another wonderful week of learning Woodpeckers!

Mini Dragons Daisy Class

Image
The Daisy Class have loved learning all about fruits and vegetables. They are now so clever at naming yummy fruits they are familiar with, such as mango and orange, and some tricky ones like passionfruit!  We loved making fruit salad with our families at Family Time this week. We made our very own fruit salad placemat to show our Mummies and Daddies which fruits we wanted in our snack. We've had lots of great outside play time also, investigating the changing weather that brings new minibeasts to the garden! We have seen lovely new kinds of plants, flowers, and snails and millipedes too!

Otter Class - HT5 W5

Image
This week in Otter class, we have had a lot of fun exploring our learning. In English, we have been learning a story map for persuasive letter writing. We also learnt what contractions are and how to use the two full words instead of a contraction in formal letter writing. In Maths, we have had a lot of fun learning about position and direction. We have learnt about left and right, quarter turns and understand that forwards and backwards depends on the direction you are facing, so it is not always the same! On Enrichment Day, we had heaps of fun, exploring fun activities centered around the storybook, 'Traction Man'. First, we started off by making a bedroom for Traction Man. We thought about our favourite items at home and what might Traction Man enjoy having in his bedroom. We then got creative and using recyclable materials, designed 3D models of his bedroom. We even painted and decorated them! We wanted to thank Traction Man for his superhero services, and decided to bake

Tulip Class: Fruit Week

Image
This week in the Tulip Class we learned all about fruits. We had some really creative activities where the children explored fruits through different sensory experiences. We made yummy fruit smoothies together. The children chopped up the fruit, helped us add it to the blender, and enjoyed trying it afterwards. We also had a lot of fun with music this week, singing and dancing to our favourite songs and learning some new ones. It has been great to see how their love of music has supported their language development. We read the story, “Oliver’s Fruit Salad” in which Oliver makes a fruit salad with his family. On Thursday, the Tulips welcomed their families who joined them in making a fruit salad. The Tulips were very excited and proud to share their routines and classroom with their families.  - Miss Taryna, Miss Angel, Mr Gino, and Miss Sai

Caterpillar Class - 24th May

Image
Another action packed week has zoomed by for Reception Caterpillars. It was brilliant to see you all during Family Time on Wednesday and the children loved sharing their classroom with you so once again thank you for all your support. Our trip to Kiztopia on Friday was amazing, the children showed great energy and enthusiasm in exploring new spaces and adapting to a different routine. We climbed and ran and swung and used so much new language and of course enjoyed celebrating the end of our unit on Giraffe’s Can’t Dance.   Our learning continued amongst all the different activities and we used our Maths skills throughout the week to talk about sharing and grouping objects equally, including ourselves! We had a lovely parcel arrive from Scotland full of letters from children in a school there. This was a great follow up to our International Day in Term 2 and was a lovely way to develop our understanding of the world by looking at similarities and difference between our lives and the l

Ladybird Week - 24th May

Image
We’ve had a wonderful week filled with learning and exciting activities! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to: Maths: This week, our focus was on understanding the concept of sharing. The children engaged in hands-on activities using physical objects and participated in maths stories to help solidify their learning. Through these practical exercises, they began to grasp the importance of dividing things equally and the joy of sharing with friends. Literacy: In literacy, we had an exciting time replying to our pen pals from a school in Scotland. The children were thrilled to receive letters full of questions and enjoyed spending time crafting their responses. Using their phonics skills, they formed sentences to answer the questions, which helped enhance their writing abilities and understanding of sentence structure. Knowledge and Understanding of the World: We explored the fascinating world of animals and their offspring. The children learned about different animals, what their ba

Bumblebee Class.

Another busy week in Bumblebee class. We were delighted to find a package brimming with letters, sent all the way from a school in Scotland! Linking with our previous international day learning, we compared our school to a rural school, in Aberdeenshire. Thinking about how our school and surroundings are similar and different. We then wrote a letter back to our new friends in Scotland, posting them at the reception post office! In math’s, we have been learning about sharing and grouping. We opened a Bumblebee Bakery and discussed how we could divide our bakes fairly between our new customers. On Wednesday we welcomed our family into our classroom for another successful family time. We reflected on all the things that we were proud of from this year and celebrated these with our families, friends and teachers. On Friday we ventured to Kidztopia to celebrate our end-of-topic learning on our Talk4Write story, "Giraffes Can't Dance." What an amazing day we had trying new thin

On Wednesday, we welcomed our families into our classroom for Family Time, sharing our learning experiences with them. In Maths, we worked hard to show Miss Purdy how much we remember from Term 2. We ended the week with an exciting trip to Kiztopia, where we had lots of fun and adventure together.

Sunflower Class - 24th May 2024

Image
This week in the Sunflower Class we have continued the theme of healthy eating with a focus on fruit.  We have been looking at the stories, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and Oliver’s Fruit Salad by Vivian French.   The children loved helping with the preparations to welcome their families into the class on Wednesday and we are very proud of the children's growing independence and sense of responsibility.  They each made a place mat and set the table ready for their families to arrive.  They understood that they were going to make a fruit salad, just like Oliver in the story.  We also learnt a song all about fruit that the children loved singing to you all. Thank you all so much for joining us for Family Time and we hope you all have a lovely weekend.  Best wishes The Sunflower Team 🌻

Jellyfish Class

Image
We have had a lovely week in the Jellyfish classroom and outside. We have been making the most of the cooler weather and the children have enjoyed the opportunities to visit the Mini Dragons and the Early Years Garden. We have hosted our friends from the other Nursery classes for Singing Assembly and Star of the Week Assembly and it has been a lovely atmosphere. It brings home just how far the children have come since the start of the year and how their friendships and confidence have blossomed. Next week we will be wrapping up our story 'The Little Red Hen' with a baking activity which I'm sure the children will all be extremely excited about. Thanks to all of you for attending this week's Parent Time, the class was buzzing all day with the anticipation of your arrival.

We have been able to make great observations about our changing weather this week and have made great progress in our phonics learning of the 'special friends' sound  'th'. In Talk4Write we have been changing our story of 'The Little Red Hen' to 'The Little Blue Dolphin' who decided to make some 'pancakes' with the help of some different friends - all fantastic ideas suggested by our sea turtles. In PE this week we enjoyed moving in different ways to music, and also learnt to play new team games that develop our social and physical skills. We also enjoyed going on a sensory walk and listening to the birds outside, as well as enjoying a special Family Time with our parents who joined us to play on Wednesday. A great week!
