Head of Senior Message - how we continue to nurture great global leaders

I am thrilled to share the highlights of a remarkable event that took place this week within our school community. Our Year 10-12 students had the unique opportunity to chair discussions on pressing global issues such as renewable energy, net zero targets, and potential government interventions during our highly anticipated Model United Nations (MUN) conference with Year 9 and the members of the MUN in Year 7 and 8.

Model United Nations, a program that simulates the United Nations, is an invaluable educational experience that nurtures future global leaders. Through role-playing as delegates from various countries, our students develop a deep understanding of international relations, diplomacy, and the complexities of global governance. This week’s conference was a testament to the profound impact of MUN on our students' growth and their readiness to tackle global challenges.

The event saw our senior students stepping into the roles of chairs and delegates, engaging in spirited debates and negotiations on some of the most critical issues facing our world today. The discussions on renewable energy and net zero targets were particularly illuminating. Students explored innovative solutions for reducing carbon footprints, transitioning to sustainable energy sources, and achieving ambitious environmental goals. The dialogue was rich with insights, demonstrating a keen awareness of the environmental challenges and the urgent need for action.

One of the most compelling aspects of the conference was the emphasis on government interventions. Our students analyzed and debated various policies that governments around the world could implement to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability. From carbon pricing to subsidies for green technologies, the range of ideas presented was impressive and highlighted the students’ understanding of policy-making and its implications.

The leadership skills exhibited by our Year 10-12 students were nothing short of inspiring. As chairs, they guided discussions with confidence, ensured fair and respectful debates, and encouraged collaboration among delegates. Their ability to manage complex topics and facilitate productive dialogue is a testament to the skills honed through their participation in MUN.

Model United Nations not only enhances students’ academic knowledge but also fosters critical thinking, public speaking, and negotiation skills. It cultivates empathy and a global perspective, encouraging students to consider diverse viewpoints and work towards common goals. These are the qualities that define great leaders—leaders who are equipped to address the multifaceted challenges of our interconnected world.

I am incredibly proud of our students for their dedication, enthusiasm, and exceptional performance during this week’s MUN conference. They have demonstrated that they are not just future leaders, but active global citizens committed to making a positive impact. My sincere thanks go to Mr Apter for all his efforts in making this event happen and indeed for two years of his energy in getting the DBS MUN started so strongly.

As we continue to support and expand our MUN program, I am confident that it will continue to inspire and empower our students. Together, we are nurturing a generation of leaders who will drive change and create a better future for all. Always to greater things....
