Deputy Headmaster's Message - Sustainability
Dear Parents and Guardians,
On Monday, Mr Dunphy led the Senior assembly on the topic of Sustainability. At DBS we value the importance of instilling in our students the principles of sustainability, ensuring that they understand the significance of their actions on the planet and recognise the power they hold as individuals to effect change.
Sustainability is about meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. It is a concept that resonates globally and touches us all deeply, especially for our teachers who know that they are educating the generation that will inherit the planet (and its problems). In the heart of our curriculum, school culture and Eco-Schools ASA, we endeavour to instil in our students a sense of responsibility for the planet and empower them to make sustainable choices in their daily lives.
The United Nations 17 Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs) serve as a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all and several of these goals are particularly pertinent to our students in Thailand, including:
Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal 6) - Thailand is a water-rich country, but its water resources are under threat from pollution and climate change. This is why we encourage our students to appreciate the importance of water conservation and water recycling practices.
Affordable and Clean Energy (Goal 7) - Thailand is transitioning to renewable energy sources, and our students need to be aware of the importance of this transition. This is why it is crucial that our students learn about the different types of renewable energy and how they can reduce their carbon footprint.
Climate Action (Goal 13) - As with many other countries, Thailand is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise and extreme weather events. It is important that our students understand the causes and effects of climate change and what they can do to mitigate its impacts.
We hope to create not just informed students, but engaged global citizens, who understand that their individual and collective actions have the power to forge a sustainable path forward. By developing an understanding and nurturing an interest in sustainable development, we are laying down a path for our students, your child, to become the conscientious leaders of tomorrow.
Thank you for reading and have a safe and restful weekend,
Simon Fowler
