Head of Senior School - Our Academic Excellence

Today saw a fitting ending to our Science week. At DBS, we often describe our teachers are caring and committed professionals. We know we have staff willing to go the 'extra' mile to support our students. I saw today the extent to which this was the case when I observed our Head of Science Faculty, Mr Michael Neville, dive out of a plane, that was very much deep into the troposphere, and then arrive on stage abseiling from the top of the Araya Hall. It was the highlight of the year so far.

What happened next was not quite as terrifying but equally impressive as Mr Neville proceeded to take us through the depth to which Science Week permeated through subjects and year groups. I observed English students writing about the Aurora; Drama students focusing on what makes atmosphere; humanities covering clouds - to name a few. I saw and heard Meteorologists talking at lunch as well as our Sixth formers working hand in hand with students from Year 3 to Year 10. I also observed our Houses coming together in their communities for the much-loved egg drop, where students could see the effect of drag in action - results to be announced on Monday. Everyone very much 'felt the Science' this week. It was excellent.

Lastly and most importantly, I saw students who purely loved their learning supported by teachers who encouraged and ignited this curiosity. My thanks go to Ms Lee, Mr Lee, Ms Murray, Mr Tinley, Khun Ploy and Khun Jun for the huge team effort. It must be stated that Mr Neville has elevated himself to a near-hero status. If the greatest learning occurs outside our comfort, he must have learned a massive amount. What a week.

I will also take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best for the half term. The school has never felt so vibrant, energetic and productive but this needs all to take time to recharge when they can. With residentials, Mocks, Sports Day and many other things to follow I urge everyone to use the half term to rest, relax and recharge.
