Mr Simon Fowler, Deputy Head
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to the new academic year after what I hope was a lovely summer for your children although, after a week and a half of school, it almost feels like we have not been away!
This week I would like to congratulate the current Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 students for their outstanding results in the summer IGCSE and A level examinations. All of these students have had a tumultuous time over the past 3 years with multiple covid disruptions, but their resilience shone through and we could not be more proud of them all.
Academic Excellent for All is one of our key pillars at DBS and is a cornerstone of our educational ethos. The pillar aims to foster an environment in which your child can excel, inspired by our guiding motto, Semper Ad Maiora — 'Always to Greater Things'. As such, I would like to take this opportunity to explore what this means in more detail.
Our outstanding teachers take a tailored approach to teaching and learning, making sure that each student’s individual learning needs are met. This personalised learning approach ensures that your child feels valued and that they can make progress.
At DBS, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and respectful environment. We are a teaching community of a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, and we feel it is important that all of our students develop a culture of respect and tolerance, allowing all to feel included, secure and valued.
In the classroom, we praise all student achievements and not just those who score the top grades. Academic excellence looks very different for each of our students, and we celebrate the effort and determination your child puts in to make that outstanding progress and to gain the grades that they may have through was out of their reach.
It is not just about the final grades, because at DBS we understand the value in developing character. We aim to build self-confidence, self-motivation, and a positive self-image in our students. We actively nurture leadership and entrepreneurial skills across all year groups, helping to provide your child with the skills required to succeed in their adult life beyond DBS.
We are committed to ensuring that DBS is a centre of excellence, where every child can reach their highest levels of personal and academic achievement. Our teachers are guided by our High Quality Learning framework and high expectations, creating an environment where your child wants to push themselves to their own personal level of excellence.
Finally, it goes without saying that all of this is made possible by your continued support, both with your child and with DBS, and we look forward to a fruitful and prosperous academic year ahead.
Have a safe and restful weekend,
Simon Fowler
