Head of Pre-Prep's Message
I am excited to share some wonderful news with you this week. At DBS, we are committed to providing the best possible education for your children, and one key aspect of that is our dedication to phonics teaching. Phonics is the foundation of reading and writing. This fundamental skill has a profound impact on your child's literacy development. Every morning in Pre-Prep, the children participate in dedicated phonics lessons. During these lessons, they learn new sounds and reinforce their existing knowledge. Phonics helps them recognise the sounds that make up words, making it easier for them to read and write independently.
Over the past month, our dedicated Pre-Prep teachers have been actively engaged in training for Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics. This training is essential to ensure that our teachers are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge, enabling them to provide the highest quality phonics teaching to your children. We are thrilled to be able to offer this essential learning experience to our students, and we believe it sets a strong foundation for their future academic success. I am excited to see the impact of our teachers' recent RWI training. Next week, I will be visiting some of our phonics lessons to observe firsthand how this training has enhanced the learning experience for our students. I am confident that you will be as impressed as I am with the dedication and expertise of our Pre-Prep team.
Finally, I would like to kindly request your support in allowing your child to attend school without wearing a mask, unless they are feeling unwell or exhibiting symptoms. This adjustment can bring several benefits to your child's education and overall development whilst learning to master phonics and to speak English in the following ways:
Clearer Communication: Without masks, your child can communicate more effectively with peers and teachers, leading to more meaningful interactions.
Enhanced Language Development: Seeing facial movements while speaking is vital for language development, helping your child learn to speak clearly and correctly.

Building Confidence: Your child's confidence in their communication abilities will grow, fostering personal growth.
Positive Emotional Connection: Without masks, your child can forge stronger emotional connections with their peers and teachers.
Better Articulation: Imitating correct mouth movements helps children articulate sounds and words accurately.
Enhanced Listening Skills: Your child can focus more on listening and comprehension when they do not have to rely solely on auditory cues.
Our staff, including our wonderful nurses remain vigilant in monitoring your child's well-being and health whilst in school. We are happy to support you with your decision with this matter.
